Gerupuk village is situated on the edge of along bay, nine kilometres east of Kuta. The village's main income along with fishing is seaweed cultivarion. The evidence of this ia abundant in the form of neat bundles, dying along the roadside and on the semi submerged bamboo  frames upon which the seaweed is calmly growing in the waters off the beach. Beasides this, Gerupuk is home ti south Lombok's most popular surf break.

Out in the bay, swells from the southern ocean buildup and break on coral reefs, providing the fine waves sought after by many surfers. Without the direct access a beach affords to a surf break it is necessary for surfers to hire a small skiff for the tripout to the surf. The short trip out to the waves boasts breathtaking scenery of cliffs and rocky crags and a view of the beatiful coastline from out at sea - another perspective. The skiffs then anchor a short distance from surfbreak and await the return of the surfers.

The Gerupuk waves are said to be more user friendly and forgiving than others on this often rough coast. It breaks on coral that is deep enough not to cause undue worry to board riders, unlike the shallow breaks and step take off points of Mawi or Desert Point (Environs Lembar) to the east. While it mostly breaks right, left breaks also peel of, but less regularly. Many said they like Gerupuk because it's fun - no just survival! The surf is best early in the morning before any wind gets up - usually before nine o'clock, but even later in the da with off-shore cross winds the waves are fine. Surfers tend mostly to be Japanese, Australians, Kuta locals and a smattering of Brazilians and French. Additionally, Gerupuk wpuld be an exceptional area windsurfers.
